Mt. Washington 2000 |
At the end of December 2000, my brother Chris & I set out for our 4th attempt at summiting Mt. Washington in the winter. This time equiped with top notch equipment combined with reasonable weather. We took the Boot Spur, the most direct root and camped just below treeline. The attempts are as follows:
1st: Great Gulf - Considerable cold and ran out of
time
2nd: Gulf of Slides: -20 F and 80 mph winds at treeline
3rd: Boot Spur: At treeline - windy, driving freezing
rain and snow, no visibility
| 4th: Boot Spur: 0 degrees and 60+ mph winds above treeline, and every covered with few inches of ice from an ice storm a week or so before |
